Wedding Traditions We Broke, Part 2

Today’s post is the second half of a mini series talking about the wedding traditions Colton and decided just weren’t for us. We both loved and hated the wedding planning process. We were able to mold the day into something that was uniquely ours, and that sometimes meant eliminating classic wedding traditions from the timeline. Part one of the mini series focused on the traditions we broke for the ceremony and today we’re talking about the reception.

Designed my own save the dates, invitations, and programs

I had the hardest time decided on the design of each of our save the dates, invitations, and programs. And the prices of printing through websites like The Knot and Minted made my stomach turn! I eventually decided to design my own save the dates, invitations, and programs in Adobe Photoshop. I found a few designs I liked from Pinterest and went from there. I then printed each on Basic Invite though the Upload Your Own feature. Here’s a money saving tip: at the time I printed each card, Basic Invite was having a 40% off all baby shower related paper products. So I found the Upload Your Own Baby Shower Invitation option and printed everything with a 40% discount!

No garter toss

Quite honestly, the thought of Colton lifting my dress and pulling an undergarment down my leg in front of my family, friends, and coworkers made my skin crawl. So we nixed the tradition completely.

Didn’t save the top tier of our cake

This particular tradition has always grossed me out! My parents, Colton, and I snacked on what was left of our wedding cake for a few weeks after the wedding, including on our honeymoon. Absolutely no regrets!

No wedding gifts

We didn’t give each other wedding gifts. We had just bought a house and we were paying for the honeymoon so extra wedding gifts just seemed like an unnecessary expense. As cheesy as it sounds, we decided that our wedding day and honeymoon would be our wedding gifts to each other.

Opted for a mini moon

While some of our friends went on two week long vacations to exotic locations, we settled for a one day drive to Galveston, Texas for a week on the beach. We decided early on that we didn’t care where we spent our honeymoon just as long as we were on a beach together. We spent the week sun bathing, eating our weight in seafood, sipping mimosas, and shopping for fun souvenirs to remember our trip by.
